A large solitary, greyish green barrel cactus that is endemic to Argentina. The recurved spines arise from very small areoles, and are reddish-brown in colour. The flowers are surprisingly colourful, in shade of pink-dark pink with a red throat. Flowers often appear more than one simultaneously for acclimatized plants in our local weather conditions.
Growing Conditions
Light: Can be under full sun outdoor (rain-sheltered) or in strong bright filtered light (indoor). The best spot to be at windowsill with bright light and good ventilation.
Water: Water only when the soil is completely dry out (about 7-10days). Watering from bottom is preferred but shake off excess water after sitting in water.
Soil: It prefers porous, well drained potting soil which consists of high content of perlites/charcoal chips/sand and small quantity of peat base-substrates.
Fertilizer: Feed the plants every 1-2 month with small amount of controlled-release fertilizer or cactus fertilizer.
Others: No known serious pests or diseases though prone to red spider mites and mealy bugs. Regular check is required on leaves/stems to avoid infestation of pests.
