Monolena primuliflora is distributed from Ecuador to Peru. It is an unusually attractive plant that appeals to growers who like foliage plants, caudex-producing plants, and ant plants. Their flowers are pale lilac and fairly small. You might also spot minute "pearl bodies" on the underside of their leaves, and these are usually eaten by a number of ant species. The variety, 'Metallic' has leaves that are exceptionally dark green in colour on the upper surface, and burgundy to wine coloured underneath.
Light: Place the plant in a well-ventilated, sheltered area where it receives dappled sunlight.
Water: Once a day, water the plants thoroughly till excess water drains out of the pot.
Temperature: Plant tolerates temperatures between 18-28°C.
Fertilizer: To boost plant's overall health, feed it with a diluted concentration of water-soluble, balanced fertilizer that contains equal amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (e.g. N-P-K: 15-15-15) once every two weeks. Otherwise, a slow-release fertilizer (e.g. Osmocote) can be incorporated into the potting media, and to be replenished after about 2-3 months. Do follow the recommended dosage indicated on the fertilizer’s application instructions.
